A snapshot of year one...
Year One learning begins with an autumn topic called ‘The Great Outdoors’. The book that everything is based on is Julia Donaldson’s ‘Stick Man’ and Alexis Deacon’s ‘Beegu’. In science children will find out all about fish, amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles, developing their reading comprehension skills in regular ‘whole class guided reading’ sessions so they can begin to research on their own! In geography children will be linking their own home location with other places in the nearby community, before moving on to learning about the four countries and capitals of the United Kingdom and then using atlases and globes to identify the UK. In maths children will be working on their number bonds to ten and begin counting in tens! In the second autumn half term learning is centred around the books ‘Paddington’ and ‘Dogger’ with the theme being ‘The Old Toy Shop’.
In the first spring half term the theme is ‘Kings and Queens’ with a book called ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ being central to learning. This will be a chance for children to learn, not only about kings and queens from the past, but also to compare how things have changed over time. The second spring half term has a theme called ‘Once Upon A Time’ and features some classic stories with a twist, such as ‘Goldilocks and The Just One Bear’ and ‘Fairy Tale Pets’.
In the summer the half termly themes are ‘The Land That Time Forgot’ (dinosaurs) and ‘Land Ahoy’ (pirates). To get the children ready for Year Two they will be developing their ability to count in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as adding and subtracting simple numbers and practising measuring length and weight. Alongside every other year group, Year One will be spending a day at the beach in the summer term too as well as enjoying a trip to Call of The Wild!

A snapshot of year two...
In Year Two, our pupils will learn to become fully immersed in a topic to our thematic, cross-curricular approach. They will learn about the Great fire of London, Inventors and the Animal Kingdom.
Alongside these exciting, fully immersive themes they will continue to develop their love of reading by working on whole class texts such as Toby and the Great fire of London, Izzy Gizmo, the day the crayons quit, the ugly five and Bog Baby. Where possible, the writing will be linked closely to the whole class text and other subjects linked to this as well. For example, looking at everyday materials in our science topic and linking this to buildings that were destroyed in the Great fire of London.
This exciting, cross -curricular learning takes place throughout the school year, and it allows our pupils to be fully immersed in their learning and be motivated to enjoy all their learning and also make them ready for Key Stage Two.
This will further be enhanced by visitors coming into our classrooms and educational visits such as to the local beach and to Hadleigh Farm as part of our science topic on animals.
